Let's be nice during high-emotion plays

Gonna post this on the forum so people take the time to read this in the spirit in which it is intended rather than in the heat of the moment.

I understand that it was dumb for someone to ask whether people are in AMC or not, and I’m not sure if they’re a new user here like they claimed, but like dunking on them and calling people names is not the way to do things. Users on the other side of the screen are real humans and during high emotion plays, they may take your snide comments and actions much more seriously than you intend.

I get muting people for violating policies, but let’s not do this for shits and giggles when someone’s being serious. I was muted today for basically saying “be nice” to the person who was asking about AMC, and educate them politely on why that was not a question that belonged on TF instead of making them feel unwelcome. The justification for the mute I got was “you’ve been annoying all day” and I don’t see how that justifies muting someone for saying be nice.

Also, most of my messages on TF today were about TA or AMC/SPY movements and asking TA-related questions, so I don’t know what “being annoying all day” was in reference to. Sure, I joked around too but my jokey messages were either a response to other jokey messages or during a time when everything was trading sideways and everyone was fooling around anyway.

To dunce and mute someone for saying “be nice” only proves their point, so let’s all calm down with making muting people a sport. Sending well meaning messages behind the intent of mod-muting doesn’t negate the fact that there absolutely are people meming and muting around in the name of enforcing community rules.

Also, if a mute only occurs after several violations, perhaps let people know what exactly they did wrong after the first violation so they can fix it. If you randomly mute someone and say “well if you were muted then that must mean you did something bad a few times before” it’s hard to just take your word for it if someone has no idea what you’re talking about. Say it to them first, and if they ignore you and keep doing the thing, then mute or ban them. The way it’s working now just seems like it gives people the ability to unjustly mute people and retroactively fit a reason.

hey man, thanks for sharing this feedback. There’s some good bits in here. We’ll talk it over and apply the bits we see fit going forward.

Thanks for listening. I appreciate it. And, again, if I did something that I don’t know I’m doing wrong, please do let me know. The last thing that I recall I got feedback about was using the bot commands in TF, which I have stopped doing since. Since then, I haven’t got any feedback for mutes.

I understand where you’re coming from. I think what’s being lost in translation is that we’re going from next to zero moderation to actually dedicated moderation so of course there’s going to be a period of “what the fuck is going on”. However, this is pushing things in the right direction.

Valhalla is the best trading community in existence… but it’s not actually a trading community first and foremost which is why it has such high appeal. The community side of Valhalla is why people stay. We’re friends, we’re a family. We have inside jokes and gags and we have a lot of fun, its that aspect that makes us different than most any other discord server I’ve ever seen. To be honest, Valhalla for some people is way more about those interactions than it is about the trading and I understand and appreciate that. This community is about way more than just trading for me as well. Its a vehicle for good, no matter how that actually ends up presenting itself in peoples lives.

Keeping this in mind, I understand why people are a bit confused by the recent move to push stricter moderation during market hours as I previewed in my recent post: Getting back on track

But there is a reason. With all the memestock chaos going on, trading-floor is more organized and calm than ever before. The information is hitting its mark, people are getting to ask meaningful questions and not get droned out and the moves that the community is making are ever more apparent. During the trading day, we should be a trading server first and foremost and we’re getting there. There will be a “equilibrium” that we meet where everyone knows that we can have some fun intraday but get right back on topic, but while we all learn what is and isn’t right, there might be a few growing pains. However, in the long run, as the average profitability of each member of our community continues to increase, those pains will absolutely be deemed worthwhile.

To the general members; use common sense. If there is a question you can answer yourself, you should probably seek the answer yourself. If you’re just looking to be negative, your comments aren’t needed. We’re here to trade, we’re here to profit and anything that detracts from that during the day needs to be avoided. We definitely need to start building a better knowledgeable here on the forum which is something I’d like to put more attention towards and we’re continuing some of our projects in the background to make the community “smarter” overall, but until all that happens, have patience and use common sense like I said.

The moderators are all doing a fantastic job and are doing exactly what was asked of them. As TF gets more orderly, things will start to loosen a little, but keep in mind, we’re focused between 9:30 and 4PM.

However, the second that bell rings at 4PM it’s gay hours and as we all know… the Valhalla we all know and love is alive and well :pepepray:

Shout out to @nano for being really nice to me, actually encouraging me to learn and grow when I said some “Stupid stuff”

It might be helpful to have a list of rules spelled out that everyone agrees to follow upon joining the server. Ive been on a few servers where you have to react to a message that lists the rules before you are given access to other channels. List out things like "don’t post gifs during TH, don’t run bot commands on the TF, etc. But I would encourage them to be specific and not just a generic “don’t be a retard” statement.

It would also be helpful to list what happens if you break a rule. If you do x, you will get a mute for 10 mins, do it a second time and it’s a day, do it a third and you might get banned.

TF during trading hours should be laser focused and I appreciate that. However a lack of communication on what’s mutable and what isn’t can put people off. I received a time out yesterday and have no idea why. Was it someone looking out for me bc I wasn’t focused or did I break a rule? I don’t know bc nobody DMd me to tell me what the reason was. I know I messed up a prayer chain but was that reason? I’m left to wonder and also be concerned that I’m on thin ice with some mod for some offense I’m unaware of.

I sincerely love this place and want to keep learning and growing as a trader. I want to keep applying what I learning and contributing to the forums. I’m very grateful for the moderators who put in their time to keep things running and I certainly appreciate the expense that is accrued to keep the lights on.

With a little more concrete documentation and more clear communication I think a lot of the uncertainty can be easily remedied.

I second that. I have never seen a discord channel so active 24/7. I left all my other discords due to no much knowledge and action during the day and AH. In this channel everyone is constantly active and very informative and extremely fun AH. We all have full time jobs and families yet, we manage to be active in the channel at all times. It’s simply amazing!! I’m thankful to be part of this family!!

To address one of your points, a list of rules can be found in #info.

I got muted today, and it hurt my feelings more than anything else and I acted out a bit because of it. In all honestly, I knew what I did and that 10 minutes really didn’t hurt me whatsoever other than my ego which is completely meaningless - it’s a discord at the end of the day.

I think we (ME) need to keep a few things in mind, to the best of my knowledge the Mods are just volunteering their time. (Not sure Anyone on this discord has the money to pay me to do that job let alone free) Conq and JB and the rest of the Gods - that spoon feed us plays are not serving some kind of community service and not required to do so, it is out of the kindness of their hearts. If it were me, I would have a breaking point where it become not worth my time, and I don’t want to be a part of causing that. (More than I might of already have been - can’t change the past just own up and work in the future)

For my part - I upped my Patrion https://www.patreon.com/m/7564512/posts - Gotta put my money where my fingers is (mouth - you know the saying)

Least I can do - in all honestly whatever amount it is there is probably worth just the general entertainment, not to mention the forums, plays, and so much more that is here.

If there is a question you can answer yourself, you should probably seek the answer yourself.

In relation to this, I think there are many people who are not able to keep up with TF or the market during the day, or maybe they’re particularly busy one day or stuck in back-to-back meetings, and they want a quick update from others in TF who have been able to stay updated. For example, someone today asked “so are you guys still in AMC” and then got immediately shat on by everyone else. In my opinion the general TF reaction was extreme and there’s no harm in a trading community to just nicely give each other a quick update, maybe considering that the person who asked possibly finally managed to find a quick window to get on Discord or sneak a message.

For people who are trading full-time or have been keeping up to date, it’d be easy to just give a quick 1 liner update/response, & if you can’t be bothered to do that, I’m sure there is someone else in chat who will, and there’s no need to shit on anyone. In fact, in the time it takes to shit on that person you could’ve just answered their question or directed them to the correct forum link or whatnot.

I think this is a good point. The follow-up to this, is that if you are one of those people who have been away for a while and want an update, then just say that. It will save you getting shit on. Good communication is a skill!

Someone could have that question answered by going to the bot command channel and typing !positions and get an answer in a quicker amount of time, or using the search feature for comments involving a ticker or keywords. Just offering alternatives. There have been several instances of people just being outright lazy or blantantly doing these things as a nuisance. If someone gets lit up by a bunch of people in trading floor, that usually isn’t done for something frivolous in my experience. We are all busy.

While I agree with the general sentiment of this, it would be optimizing for the wrong use case. The moderation policy should be prioritized to create a pleasant and professional environment for the majority of the people that is present rather than creating exceptions for small categories of folks in different circumstances. There will always be another person with another question that has been answered many time prior and it is simply not feasible to ‘be nice’ on every occasion.

I’d agree for something like “What is Conq in now” they should really use the bot command because that’s literally what it’s for and would be the most direct way to get the answer.

essentially what littlebear said. they can easily use a search function or run their own commands. We’re at a point where conq has a bot with quantity, ticker, and strike. I’m not sure what else we can do to enable others to find information any easier. we’re all busy. if someone’s in that position then that’s a pretty clear sign they shouldn’t be in the trade in the first place.

edit - this is not to say people should pile on and be dicks, but we shouldn’t be encouraging spoon feeding people either for a plethora of reasons.

And as we’ve seen, an alarming amount of people blindly follow his positions regardless of personal risk tolerance or position sizing so if Conq is still in a position it’s a pretty good indication most are still in to some extent.

Yeah I agree with this. To clarify: the point of my original message was not that that person was in the right for asking “are you guys still in AMC” but that there were nicer ways to let them know that they should just use the bot channel than having like 20 people dunk on them en masse. Like even one mod message rather than 20 random people shitting on them would’ve been better.

Yeah for a question like that I completely agree. Use the bot command.

I don’t have a good example off the top of my head of what may be an “acceptable question to ask that shouldn’t have gotten dunked on” but I do remember seeing the dunking happen and I remember feeling like the reaction was extreme or unnecessarily negative. Maybe it’s because I’m not the one doing any modding that I don’t feel ‘annoyed’ by any of the questions, but that’s just my 2c as someone who’s pretty active in TF.

That aside, don’t get me wrong — I appreciate the mods for doing their modding. You guys are integral to a functional trading Discord. There’s a growing process here and we are all part of this road to becoming the best possible trading community that we can be.

I edited my reply to agree with the sentiment about piling onto someone.

Essentially there’s a way to not be dicks to those types of questions while also encouraging members to do their own research (whether that’s within valhalla or externally).

Mods are humans as well and I admire them for not being more frustrated about questions in TF that can be easily answered by checking forum / google / latest news for the stock / bot commands / current stock price.
